What is a MPU?

In Germany, an average of 90,000 people have their driving license revoked each year. However, it is not the case that you automatically get your driving license back after the suspension period. Rather, you have to apply for it again and often undergo a medical-psychological examination (MPU).

Reasons for ordering an MPU include driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication and 8 points in the driving aptitude register at the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg.

The MPU is therefore used to assess both the physical and personal requirements for driving a motor vehicle.

The psychological part of the MPU is particularly tricky. Here, it must be convincingly demonstrated to the assessor that the reasons that led to the revocation of the driving license no longer apply.

High failure rate

In 2021, almost 90,800 MPUs were carried out in Germany. 43% of all participants failed. Not only do they not get their driving license back, but they also have to bear all the costs of the MPU. Depending on whether hair analysis or urine tests are necessary due to alcohol or drug offenses or not, the costs for an MPU are approximately between 350 and 750 euros. The process
of a MPU

In order to understand exactly how our MPU consulting can help you, you need to understand the MPU, and specifically the psychological examination, a little better.

This MPU consists of 3 areas:

Performance test

This test tests your perception, concentration and reaction. It is intended to simulate impressions and a certain amount of stress that also arise when driving a motor vehicle.

Medical examination

This is a general physical and neurological examination. In some cases, a drug or alcohol-related examination is also carried out.

Psychological examination

This is the main part of the MPU. You will have the opportunity to comment on the incidents that led to the withdrawal of your driving license. You can also explain what has changed in you since then and what you plan to do in the future.

The psychological examination

The psychological examination is the main component of an MPU. You will have a conversation with an expert, whom you must convince that you have seriously considered the reasons that led to the withdrawal of your driving license. To do this, you must explain the reasons and causes for your behavior at the time. It is also crucial that you can convince the expert of a fundamental and permanent change in behavior and/or attitude.

In the psychological examination of the MPU, you will therefore comment on the following points:

  • What did you do wrong in the past?
  • Why did you do it this way and not another way?
  • What have you changed since then to change this misbehavior?
  • Why did you change your behavior?
  • How do you ensure that this behavior change(s) is permanent? (In certain cases, a change in behavior must be proven by, for example, a drug or alcohol test.).

In the psychological examination of the MPU, you must convince the assessor of your fundamental change in attitude and demonstrate a stable and permanent change in behavior.

The goal of our MPU consultation is therefore to strengthen your awareness of the problem and to achieve a fundamental change in attitude and behavior.

The first step is to make you aware of what exactly you did wrong and why you did it that way. To do this, we will look at and analyze your behavior together that led to the withdrawal of your driving license.

In order to determine your role in the loss of your driving license, we will examine the risk factors that led to your behavior together. We will also point out any incorrect attitudes and incorrect reactions you had at the time and, if applicable, today, and reflect on and work on them with you.

In the next step, you will work with us to develop behavioral alternatives to your previous behavior so that you do not fall back into your previous incorrect behavior.

At the end of the MPU consultation, you should be aware of the causes and reasons for your misconduct, know and have practiced alternative behaviors, and know what further steps you may need to take so that you can participate in road traffic inconspicuously and lawfully in the future.

Scope and costs of an
MPU consultation

The cost of MPU counseling (individual online counseling) is €120 per 60 minutes including VAT.

The scope of MPU counseling is usually 5-10 hours.

In most cases, counseling takes place online. All you need is a mobile phone.
